Thomas Becket Week 4

Yesterday the young learners from Thomas Becket spent the morning taking part in a Robolab activity, a session that focuses on ICT and computer programming where they build buggies out of Lego and take part in a range of challenges. They worked in pairs to complete the challenges, which included having two wheels and motors and making the buggy rotate exactly 360 degrees, then adding another 1 or 2 wheels to build a car that would drive in a straight line and stop between two points marked on the floor. Lastly they had to drive their car and park it in the Saints garage without it touching the sides or hitting the back. For the finale the young learners raced their buggies in the ‘Championship Race.’

After lunch the children had a practical rugby session where they played a range of rugby games which involved teamwork and also had a competitive side.

The Friars School Week 20

To start their day the boys from The Friars School completed their own version of the premiership rugby season. Using dice and rolling 5 times for each team’s score they used tables to calculate points awarded for each team and the result for each game.

The boys then had an hour practical where they played some rugby and also learnt rugby related games to teach to young learners. We then went to Spring Lane Primary School where the boys conducted their own rugby session for a class of Year 5 children, playing games such as Superheroes and Villains, Alien Attack and Numbers Rugby.

Earl Spencer

On Tuesday we welcomed students from Earl Spencer Primary School, who are studying the history of the Saints at school so they spent the day at the Study Centre learning all about the Northampton Rugby Club. They started their day by making name badges on the computer, using Word Art, changing the background and inserting photos to create a unique design. After drinks and snacks the children had an hour practical session with one of the Saints community coaches where they played a variety of rugby based games including tag rugby.

In the afternoon the children of Earl Spencer had the opportunity to go into the Saints stadium and look in the home changing rooms. They then ran out of the tunnel as the Saints players do on match days. Following this the young learners learnt how to do origami, and by simply folding paper they made their very own origami kit. They also learnt about logos, sponsors and the symbolism of the images within the Saints badge.

Lumbertubs Barclaycard Reward Day

On Friday we welcomed children from Lumbertubs Primary School for a Barclaycard Reward Day. We were also joined by a team of Barclaycard employees who gave up their day to volunteer at the Study Centre, who helped with the young learners, enhancing their experience at the Saints.

The Year 3 children started their day by making name badges on the computer, using Word Art, inserting pictures and changing the background colour to make a unique design. They then learnt how to do origami, making rugby kits by folding paper to create a shirt and shorts.

After snacks they had a practical rugby session with a Saints community rugby coach, playing games such as tag rugby, numbers rugby and super heroes and villains. This was followed by a stadium tour where the students went into the home changing rooms and sat in the cubicles the Saints players sit in, and they then ran out of the stadium tunnel as the Saints players do on match days.

To end the day the children from Lumbertubs made a postcard on their day at the Saints, and utilising the skills they learnt from making name badges earlier in the day they added in photos, Word Art, coloured backgrounds and even changed the shape of the photos to improve the aesthetics of their work.

PFS Week 2

For their second week of PFS the young learners from Hopping Hill, Standens Barn, Kings Heath, Lyncrest, Spring Lane and Delapre schools have been conducting player interviews. Each evening the children prepared a list of questions to ask, and practised asking them in the style of a press conference. We were then joined by some of the Saints players and the children were lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview them, the players included Noah Cato, Calum Clarke, Dylan Hartley, Teimana Harrison and Alex Day and also the Director of Rugby Jim Mallinder attended one of the days and answered the childrens questions.

Thomas Becket Week 3

This week the young learners from Thomas Becket were joined by Sarah Mason, a Maths teacher from Sir Christopher Hatton, who set a range of mathematical challenges for the children to solve. They were split into groups and worked together to complete a range of activities including shape and number problems and word puzzles.
After lunch they spent some time on I Am Learning, a revision website that uses games to encourage, engage and motivate students to learn.
The young learners then had an hour practical where they played tag rugby and a variety of rugby based games, incorporating hand eye coordination, team work and observation skills.

The Friars School Week 19

The boys from Friars School started their day at the Study Centre by continuing with their Saints Programme Trail they started last week. They completed a player profile on a Saints player of their choice, also writing information about the latest games including the score, who scored, if anyone received a red or yellow card and who the man of the match was.
After a break the boys went out for an hour practical where they were shown techniques for how to take a rugby session of their own, teaching younger learners tag rugby. We then went to Lyncrest Primary School and they put their new skill to the test by coaching a Year 2 P.E lesson, playing games such as Superheroes and Villains, Tag Rugby and Numbers Rugby.

PFS Week 1

This week the young learners from Hopping Hill, Standens Barn, Kings Heath, Lyncrest, Spring Lane and Delapre schools took part in our ‘healthy eating’ week. They spent some time with Jeanette who spoke to them about balanced diets, a healthy breakfast, 5 a day and they also covered the five main food groups on the eat well plate. There were a variety of fruits on offer for the children to try, from kiwis to blueberries, and watermelon to tomatoes; some of the children were adventurous and tried all 16 different fruits! They then picked their 3 favourite fruits and made a smoothie to finish off the first part of the session.
They then went onto the computers and created a poster advertising their newly created smoothie; using alliteration for their title, bright colours and slogans to make them stand out.

Particular smoothie favourites of the Study Centre staff are pineapple, orange and mango and also strawberry, blackberry and raspberry-it’s berry tasty!!

This week the students from Thomas Becket got involved in ‘healthy eating’ week. In the morning they spent some time with Jeanette talking about eating a healthy breakfast, a balanced diet, 5 a day and they also covered the five main food groups on the eat well plate. A wide variety of fruits were on offer for the children to try, many were adventurous and tried all 16 different fruits, and they finished the session by making a smoothie using their 3 favourite fruits. The Thomas Becket students were then tasked with making a poster advertising their newly created smoothie, using the computers.
They then took part in an hour practical where they played tag rugby, and a variety of competitive and team work games.

The Friars School Week 18

This week the boys from Friars school have been completing the Saints ‘Programme Trail’. They were tasked with looking through a Saints programme and answering questions about it, looking at advertising, player interviews and creating player profiles, Saints news, previous games and reading tables and interpreting data.

After an hour practical session where they took part in a range of competitive and team work games, they had the afternoon focusing on healthy eating. Jeanette spent some time with the boys talking about their 5 a day, having a healthy breakfast, a balanced diet and covering the five main food groups on the eat well plate. They then had a taste of the 16 fruits we had on offer, and made a smoothie with their 3 favourite fruits.
